Lutheran Historical Conference Biennial Meeting

The LHC will gather to hear papers focused on this conference theme:
“Lutherans on the Frontiers of Faith, Culture, Geography, and Society”
It has been a generation since the Lutheran Historical Conference has met on the West Coast. The October 2018 biennial meeting will be the first gathering held in Southern California and will inaugurate the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the first documented arrival of Lutherans in the Western Hemisphere⸻an ill-fated expedition of Danish Lutherans who were searching for the storied Northwest Passage to the Far East⸻who spent the winter of 1619‒1620 in the Hudson Bay area. The LHC Program Committee invites the membership of the Conference to submit proposals about Lutherans who were pioneers on various frontiers of church and society. Papers dealing with any aspect of this theme are welcome. Paper proposals outside of the theme are also welcome and will be seriously considered.
Speakers will be given twenty minutes for their presentations, followed by five to ten minutes of Q and A and discussion. Paper proposals should include a title, a 250 word (maximum) abstract, and a brief biographical sketch of the presenter.

Some basic ground rules for submissions: The Program Committee reserves the right to accept or reject any paper proposal for the good of the LHC and its biennial meeting. Presenters must be or become members of the Lutheran Historical Conference before the convening of the meeting. Presenters are alone responsible for covering conference fees and all travel costs and are encouraged to apply for financial support from their home institutions. Students are also encouraged to submit paper proposals and to apply to the LHC Board of Directors for limited scholarship assistance with travel-related expenses.
The Program Committee will seriously consider all legitimate submissions and will inform each submitter of its decision whether or not to include his/her proposal as part of the 2018 LHC program. Besides hearing and reacting to papers, the LHC will transact official business, hold elections, and will go on a bus tour of sites of interest in the area.
